If surgical treatment for obesity is excluded in my policy, is there any way to UHC to pay, since obesity is considered a disease?
I have United Health Care Choice Plus and I really want to have Lap-Band/weight loss surgery. I went to a seminar today and I just looked at my policy and it says that WLS is excluded. Is it worth appealing? Any suggestions on how I can get them to pay?
PLEASE DON'T LEAVE ME AN ANSWER LIKE "GO TO THE GYM" OR "EAT LESS". ONLY ANSWERS TO THE QUESTION, PLEASE.
And don't tell me NOT to do the surgery. I'm not asking your opinions on weight loss surgery and dieting. I need some advice regarding my insurance. Thanks.
In your case, you will need to have some really disabling and/or potentially life-threatening conditions associated with your obesity. And you will have to have a surgeon willing to really go to bat for you and convince your insurance company that it's absolutely necessary. Sometimes, and unfortunately, even that's not enough. I hope and pray things work out for you. Don't give up on it yet.

How is one to decide whether he has become obese or not? The most acceptable method to determine it is the calculation of BMI or Body Mass Index. A person with a BMI of 30 or above is termed as obese. Obesity has much to do with the fat content in the body. Fats are deposited under the layer of skin. It helps someone get energy when he is without food for long. Apart from that it also finds its usage in regulating body temperature, insulating and cushioning vital organs and tissues. Fats are an essential need of the body but excess possession of it is not recommended for good health.
But overeating, lack of physical exercises, hereditary problem or side effect of any medication can give rise to increase in fat level in the body. Heart problems, type-II diabetes, high blood pressure, prostate cancer, cancer of colon and rectum, gout and gouty arthritis, sleep apnoea, stroke etc. are some of the diseases which can show up in the course of time due to obesity.
It is imperative to reduce the fat level in the body to reduce obesity. There are many methods to get over obesity. Prominent amongst them are workouts, controlled diet program, surgery, liposuction, and diet pills. Surgery and liposuction are costly affairs where as exercises and controlled diet program are slow acting. And diet pills effectiveness on reducing obesity is not much if taken individually. It has to be taken in combination with exercises and controlled diet pills.
Reductil is a diet pill which suppresses the appetite. The suppression of the appetite makes way for one to consume less food. As a result, when one needs energy it is derived from fats residing in the body.
The usage of Reductil should be limited. It should not be used for long periods. In case of its medication consultation with a doctor is a must. Utmost care should be taken before its usage as a weight loss drug. Consultation with a doctor is a must for children, breast feeding or pregnant woman. Other than these, those persons with heart ailments, diabetes, high blood pressure, allergy and hypertension should also contact a doctor if they are to take Reductil diet pills.
Side effects like dry mouth, headache, depression, impotence, sweating, bowel disorder, seizures, anxiety, increased heart rate etc. may occur in the initial phase of its intake. If the side effects prevail for longer duration one should consult a doctor.
As with any other medication a doctor is the apt person to decide what should be prescribed for a patient. Prescription of Reductil diet pills is one of them. Over and above the use of Reductil diet pills, a patient should also take care of having a controlled diet program and do physical activities to lose more fats and add more of lifespan.

The use of liposuction to eliminate excess fat has grown dramatically over recent years; although this should not be viewed as a treatment for weight loss. However, there is a strange and unexpected side effect where the fat can return; but not necessarily in the region it was originally taken from.
If you are planning to have the treatment you will probably be offered one of two common methods, Ultrasonic or tumescent although there are others. Tumescent is one of the latest advances in this type of treatment which is now is one now of the most commonly performed cosmetic surgeries in the USA. Fat is removed by a smaller tube and this also helps to reduce the amount of bruising that occurs with the traditional method. Virtually every patient to date has found the tumescent liposuction technique to be less painful, provides better results with more rapid healing and recovery.
Ultrasonic liposuction enables the removal of fat in areas that were previously unable to have liposuction such as the back, upper abdomen and male breast. The conventional method is often more difficult to perform over other cosmetic treatments because the surgeon cannot see where the probe is, and as a consequence internal injury can be the result. As always the best course of action for a prospective patient is to speak to the surgeon who is going the carry out the procedure and learn what method is best suited for them.
There is danger in every medical procedure and although liposuction is normally safe when performed by a professional, there is still a risk involved, even death, although this is very rare. To help reduce this risk, physical examinations are necessary for all subjects to make sure that every individual is healthy enough for the procedure to go ahead. Infections can occur after any surgery so some physicians prescribe an antibiotic to patients because of the importance of keeping wounds clean until they heal.
Fortunately though, in the past few years much progress has been made in the field of cosmetic surgery in respect to this procedure. Lipo dissolve another type of liposuction involves a series of injections of a compounded mixture of drugs into areas of body fat: including saddlebags, double chins, hips and other hard to reach places. As the process is almost pain free, patients can have it performed whilst they are fully conscious and with other cosmetic skin treatments that do not require surgery.

I have recently read about this new technique for weight loss. The put a tiny surgical staple on the cartilage of your ear. It's supposed to be the same as getting acupunture. What do you think? Safe? Unsafe? Think it would really work. Statistics say yes!
It is a scam. If it worked (it has been done for many years) why would there be so many fat people (myself included). There is no easy way to lose wt. It takes long term commitment and work, otherwise there would be very few obese people in this country.

Liposuction is designed to bring out the best in your body. If you’ve been dieting and exercising, but still notice small areas on your body that you just can’t seem to lose, it may be time to consider liposuction.
Liposuction has become the most commonly performed cosmetic procedure in the United States. The ideal candidate is physically fit and eats well-balanced meals, yet is unable to reduce fatty deposits in certain areas of the body.
Liposuction is a body contouring surgery that will enhance the work you have already done in weight loss and exercise. While some patients seek a total body makeover, and undergo liposuction of the body, arms, thighs and lower legs, others may choose to refine smaller areas.
The patient must have realistic expectations. The ideal candidate will be only 10-20 pounds overweight. The patient should also be in good physical health, and have a well balanced diet and exercise plan in place.
As a patient, share with your doctor your daily patterns. Crash dieting before a consultation, or before the surgery, can only add to the complications you’ll experience after the surgery. Remember, the more you share with your doctor upfront, the better experience you will have with the surgery and the outcome.
If you’ve tried dieting throughout your life, and tend to regain weight after a time, liposuction may be an answer. Not uncommonly, many liposuction patients notice a decrease in their appetite for several months following the procedure. This decrease can also help create a new eating pattern, which can also help protect your investment.
Liposuction is generally performed to reduce the fatty deposits that accumulate in areas unresponsive to diet and exercise. Common areas for liposuction include the upper and lower abdomen, outer and inner thighs, arms, inner knees, ankles and calves, neck and back, and the flanks or love handles.
The patient should schedule a consultation, and provide a complete history before the surgery is scheduled. Share with your surgeon things like medication intake, medication allergies, prior surgeries and results, history of diseases, personal and family history of medical events, including seizures and heart problems.
As a patient, express your goals, and verify you understand the outcome. Make sure you receive a complete explanation of the procedure, and understand the risks, alternatives, and benefits. Also discuss the insertion area. If at all possible, you might be able to place it in an area typically hidden by your clothing choices.
