Megadosing Mineral Supplements

Mineral supplements might sound natural but they are in fact usually made from chemical sources and are contrary to the natural route to health. And yet, more and more people seem to be bent on taking vitamin and mineral supplements on a regular basis. There will always be the doubts about how good these chemicals are for you and whether they could prove harmful.

The fact is that chemical mineral vitamin supplements are not as easily absorbed as normal food particles a mineral vitamin supplements are. More and more research is going into creating products that are friendlier to the body and hence more beneficial. Every now and then the industry comes up with a new ‘more bio-available’ form of a vitamin or mineral. One of the measures that have been taken to overcome the problem is to combine other bio-friendly elements in the chemical vitamins so as to enhance the absorption capacity of the body. Iron for example is administered as iron gluconate, enabling the body to absorb the iron more readily.

The proportion of the nutrients in the vitamin supplement should be relatively higher that it would be found in natural form and only when the proportion is high the body will be able to assimilate the quantity that is really necessary for the body. When the nutrients are consumed more than the needed quantity, it will increase the toxic levels in the body leading to other complications. This is why it is so important that one must consult with a health professional before ingesting large quantities of supplements touted in advertisements. There is constant change in this industry and there are new supplements being brought into the market so often and one should take note of these.

To aid absorption, manufacturers have developed a method where the raw material is cultured through yeast cells. Yeast gets completely digested so the required nutrients are more easily absorbed by the body. This type of supplements is called ‘food state’.

However, the actual need of mineral vitamin supplements is going to depend on each individual’s diet. There is no doubt that it is far more preferable for a person to obtain the nutrients that they require from their food rather than by taking supplements, wherever possible. During certain periods it may be necessary for a person to take mineral vitamin supplements on a temporary basis but their long term use is not recommended for a number of the supplements that are currently available.
